The resolution calls for a full and complete ceasefire, unfettered distribution of humanitarian aid across the Gaza Strip and the release of all Israeli hostages and Palestinians in detention, among other commitments.
“While the news should be welcomed with open arms, it's also being met with skepticism as previous UN resolutions have not been accompanied by the requisite political pressure on the parties to the conflict”, says Rocco Blume, War Child Alliance's Head of Advocacy. “The UN Security Council and all Member States must take decisive action to secure an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the safe passage of aid to children and civilians across Gaza, the return of displaced civilians to their homes and a withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Strip.
“It’s too late for so many children in Rafah killed and maimed in a designated 'safe zone', and it’s too late for the children in Nuseirat who were bombed in their homes. Yet, if enacted immediately, it does offer a critical lifeline for the 1.1 million children that remain - and an opportunity for justice and international security to prevail."
