The Care System

The Care System is War Child’s approach to meeting the complex needs of children affected by conflict and crisis. It connects different forms of expertise and support, shaped by evidence and local knowledge, to help children, families and communities access the care they need.

Based on evidence

Our methodologies are built on evidence and more than 25 years of experience working with children affected by conflict. We research, design, test and evaluate all methodologies, helping us to understand what works and how to improve it.

Our Research and Development department has produced and contributed to more than 100 peer-reviewed academic articles since 2016, building a strong evidence base for our work.

Interconnected

We know that children’s needs are often connected, and that different types of support may be needed at the same time. The Care System is designed to bring together different methodologies so that different forms of support can work together, drawing on expertise across education, child protection, and mental health and psychosocial support.

Multi-level

We recognise that conflict affects children and those around them in different ways, and that people need different kinds of support. The Care System brings together different levels of support, from early help to more specialised care, depending on what each child and community needs.

Community-centred

We consider the social environments surrounding each child and support not only children themselves, but also their peers, families and communities. We work with children, families, communities and partners to adapt methodologies to respond to what’s needed in different contexts.

Quality of care

We know that how support is delivered matters. War Child’s Quality of Care Framework helps us monitor, maintain and improve the quality of our work for children.
