In Memoriam: Michaela DePrince
Sept. 13, 2024
Michaela experienced a dramatic childhood in a civil war-torn Sierra Leone. During this war and at a young age, she lost her parents. Fear and violence dominated Michaela's childhood, but one dream kept her going: to become a ballet dancer. And how she succeeded! Michaela shone as a ballerina in world-famous theatres and met many world greats. Many people were eager to support Michaela and our mission: to fight for the mental well-being of children exposed to conflict.
Her personal story of loss and triumph, from orphan to world-famous ballerina, brought hope to thousands of people. With her infectious enthusiasm and steadfast conviction, she was a voice for those not usually heard. "I believe mental health is as important as physical well-being," was her firm conviction. These words were not only a reflection of her own experiences, but also an urgent message to the world.
As an ambassador, Michaela worked tirelessly for War Child. Her visits to projects in Uganda and Lebanon, but also closer to home in asylum seeker centres in the Netherlands, were evidence of her dedication. Children walked and danced with her. Her endearing smile, warm hugs and personal story helped many children cope with their invisible scars.
"War Child gives children the support I would have loved to have had as a child," she told our colleagues. That desire to help others was a driving force in everything she did.
As the War Child family, we are devastated. We will remember Michaela as a star who inspired everyone to pursue dreams even in the darkest moments. We are committed to carrying on her legacy by continuing to fight for the rights and well-being of children in conflict.
Keep dancing, Michaela.
We are thinking of all who knew, loved, and were ever involved with Michaela, at this very sad time.
