Scaling Access and Improving Continuity: The Next Phase of the Can't Wait to Learn Uganda Game

Can’t Wait to Learn is taking an important step forward in expanding high-quality foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) learning for children, starting in Uganda. We want all children in school to benefit from Can’t Wait to Learn. Building on years of evidence, and following extensive collaboration with teachers, and our partners in district government we are now upgrading the Can’t Wait to Learn game to make it more accessible, more flexible, and better integrated with school-level systems.
Unlimited user access for every classroom
Can’t Wait to Learn always works offline, it is a core design requirement for the game. Until now, devices could only support a limited number of learner profiles, which restricted access in larger classrooms. Classrooms that are often even larger in the refugee hosting districts. Can’t Wait to Learn works with the support of the Ministry of Education and Sport in Uganda.
A major focus of this upgrade is the login and user-management process. We are redesigning the system so that each device can host an unlimited number of users, removing a potential barrier to scale and equity of access. With this change, every child in a school will be able to log in easily, learn at their own pace, and return to their progress at any time. They will engage with Can't Wait to Learn across Grades 1-5 for roughly a term each year, integrating into delivery of the national curriculum.
Before, teachers in Uganda using Can't Wait to Learn were manually tracking data, but with the new game upgrade, data collected will be automatically synchronised with a local server they can access.
Automated data collection for real-time insights
A second critical development is the automation of data collection through a local server. Instead of relying on manual data transfers or intermittent connectivity, devices will synchronise usage and learning data automatically whenever they connect to the local network. This provides teachers, district officials - including in central government, and our partners programme teams with more reliable, timely insights - helping us track engagement, monitor fidelity, and continuously improve the learning outcomes of children using Can’t Wait to Learn.
Seamless learning that follows every child on any device
Finally, we are upgrading the game itself so that children can continue their learning on any device. By separating user progress from the physical tablet, learners will no longer be tied to a single device. Whether a child uses a tablet in Class A today and another in Class B tomorrow, their progress will follow them seamlessly. This flexibility is essential in schools where tablets are shared, and classroom dynamics vary throughout the week.
This upgrade will enhance the capacity of governments and single schools to build foundational literacy and numeracy at a higher scale.
A major leap for learning in Uganda, taking foundational learning to the next level
Together, these improvements will transform how Can't Wait to Learn supports foundational learning starting in Uganda, but then beyond that, into the other contexts in which our partners work. They will enable us to reach every child in participating schools - regardless of class size, device availability, or scheduling constraints. Our initial roll-out will take place in 36 schools, but the vision is to expand rapidly, ensuring that more children can benefit from high-quality, engaging, and adaptive game-based learning.

By strengthening the foundation of the Can't Wait To Learn platform in Uganda, we are moving closer to our mission to empower governments, partners, and educators to enable crisis-affected children to build effective foundational literacy and numeracy skills at scale through evidence-based, digital personalised learning, that addresses individual learning gaps, strengthens teaching capacity, and integrates with education systems.
