War Child Statement on Escalating Violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Dec. 10, 2025
War Child staff report growing fear as the threat of violence escalates across multiple locations across the region. Many families are attempting to flee, but severe border restrictions are blocking safe routes. Those without resources are left behind in precarious conditions, and children are visibly distressed, absorbing the fear and uncertainty around them.
According to the UN, at least 74 people have been killed and 83 wounded, with ongoing violence cutting civilians off from hospitals and education. Schools – places that should be safe for children – have also come under fire, killing at least seven children and injuring many more. In just one week, more than 200,000 people have been displaced, with thousands fleeing across borders in search of safety.
Prior to the current escalation, 14.9 million people were already in need of humanitarian assistance in the DRC. A new wave of violence layered on years of instability will only expose children to more danger. Since early December, more than 1,200 schools have closed in South Kivu, leaving nearly 400,000 children out of school.
We urgently call on all parties to protect children, prevent further violence, and allow civilians safe passage out of danger. By signing the Safe Schools Declaration in 2016, the DRC pledged to ensure that education remains protected even in situations of armed conflict. Children, humanitarian workers, schools, and health facilities must be protected.
We call on the international community to intensify efforts to prevent further deterioration, protect civilians, and ensure that lifesaving assistance reaches those most in need without delay.
War Child, alongside its partners, supports children and caregivers affected by violence. We are launching a rapid needs assessment to identify what displaced families urgently need now.
